Lyon Light Journeys

This project was developed specifically for the Fetes des Lumieres, an annual event held in December in Lyon, France, that celebrates creativity with light. Mooch embraced the use of light and innovative materials and sourced support from UK based companies in order to take this interactive project to the Fetes as an introduction to Mooch working in Europe.

Using an abstracted map of the town, overlaid on photoluminscent vinyl, participants were given tiny torches to track a route and use this light journey to consider how they use the streets and bridges, to see the shapes of these journeys and perhaps re-evaluate this process. In doing so one could discover new ways to use the City and challenge its hidden potential.

The 3 x Lyon maps were applied to the walls in the old part of the City for the 2 nights of the festival and were enormously well received. The maps were constantly inundated with participants of all ages queueing to explore and create some wonderful journeys and abstract shapes. Even, on occasion, creating love tokens…

This mooch initiative was sponsored by Leaside Regeneration which was established in 1998 with a mission to deliver innovative and exemplary sustainable regeneration for Leamouth in Docklands, London. The company embraced many different disciplines and united to bring fresh thinking and enthusiasm to complex and difficult regeneration issues. The project was also supported by Mirafield Graphics, a digital print and presentation company based in East London. They provide rapid response digital printing to the City, Docklands and the Southeast and finally, the vinyl came from Kemco Technology, manufacturers of photoluminescent vinyl.

Photoluminescent vinyl was to feature years later in another Mooch project, PERFUGIUM MISERIS.
