Murray House Artwork
Circle Thirty Three Housing Trust wanted to produce an integrated artwork to be installed as part of the redevelopment of Murray House, a residential development originally under the care of the United Women's Homes Association providing housing for women on low incomes, including war widows, since 1925. The site was down a small side street with oblique views.
The history of the Association provided a springboard for the development of the lacey detail that floats around the new building, and its delicate, decorative logo of the 1920’s publication “Feminine Life”. The laser cut, powder coated steel installation would be made up from drawings of favourite flowers, donated by the current residents of Murray House and brought together to create a flying ribbon of blossom that animates and feminises an otherwise formal and rectilinear structure. The work also gives the new building a presence from the main road which announces and celebrates the valuable work of this long established, successful organisation.
