Whitechapel Road Ribbon
2004 – 6 x 1.5 metres. Granite and LED lighting
Following a residents campaign for a safer street, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets proposed a homezone, a pedestrianised street which reduces traffic speed and create a more family friendly environment. Mooch won the competition to be the community artist and create a unique entrance for the homezone.
Following extensive community consultation to inform the design process, Mooch created a ribbon of granite across the road which sweeps up into solid granite benches at either side. These are illuminated by red LED lights securely embedded in the stone. The after school group who worked with Mooch wanted a hopscotch to play on, as a result this was included in the project.
This artistic solution employs visual and physical indicators to encourage drivers to slow down and create a safer street for all. It also uses the principles of designing out crime to define the transition between the fast moving main road and the slower environment of the homezone. The red lighting not only conveys “stop” it also animates the space at night giving the area a beacon to welcome visitors.
