This commission by the London Borough of Newham, forms part of their Regenerating Newham programme. It deals with an eyesore site in East Ham’s High Street North, addressing the physical regeneration of the borough by reducing the desire to flypost the site.
Mooch used images of local residents as they went about their business to create a unique profile of the community. This stretch of pavement is a point of transit where people simply pass through and the hoarding is there to share your journey.
The second phase of the installation in the alleyway leading from the High Street created certain figures picked out in mirror vinyl. This detail, enabling passers by to see themselves in someone else’s profile, hopes to encourage passers by to perhaps consider a different perspective from their own, even if only for a fleeting moment.
Newham is the first borough in the country to have an ethnic majority, encompassing 200 languages, this installation represents and merges these diverse communities.
Some figures were mirrored for passers by to "change places"
The hoarding covered works on the derelict site.
All the figures were local residents captured in their daily routine.
The front hoarding was extended in the 2nd phase down the alleyway.
The hoardings were design to create a seamless parade.
